Is My Child Ready for Preschool? 7 Signs to Look For

Your child is the right age for preschool, but are they ready? It is one of the most common questions parents ask during admission season, and it is a good one to ask.

Readiness is not about knowing letters or numbers. It is about whether your child can feel comfortable and settled in a new place, away from you for a few hours. Here are seven gentle signs to look for, and what to do if a few are not there yet.

Why Readiness Matters as Much as Age

Age tells you which class your child fits into. Readiness tells you how easily they are likely to settle in. A child who is ready usually adjusts faster, enjoys school sooner, and has fewer tearful mornings. 7 Signs Your Child May Be Ready

These are general signs, not a checklist your child must pass. Most children show some, and grow into the rest once school begins.

  1. They can spend short periods away from you. They manage time with a grandparent or relative and settle down after you leave. The CDC's milestones for age 3 include calming down within about 10 minutes after a parent leaves, such as at a childcare drop-off.
  2. They can tell an adult what they need. In words, gestures or a mix of both, they can let someone know they are hungry, thirsty, hurt or need the toilet.
  3. They are aware of toilet needs. They do not need to be fully trained, but showing signs of knowing when they need to go is helpful. Ask the school how they support toilet learning.
  4. They are curious about other children. They watch other children, notice them, or try to join in play, even if they don't share easily yet.
  5. They can follow a simple routine. Things like "wash hands, then snack" or "shoes off, then inside" make sense to them with a little reminding.
  6. They are starting to do small things for themselves. Such as feeding themselves, trying to put on loose clothes, or carrying their own bag.
  7. They are curious and like to explore. They ask questions, enjoy new toys and places, and want to try things for themselves.

If Some Signs Aren't There Yet

That is completely normal. Many of these skills grow quickly once children are in a caring, routine-based setting. You can also help at home:

  • Practise short separations by leaving your child with a trusted adult for an hour or two, and always say a calm goodbye rather than slipping away.
  • Give them small jobs like putting toys away or carrying their plate to the kitchen.
  • Set up play dates or visit the park so they get used to being around other children.
  • Keep a steady daily routine for meals, naps and bedtime.
  • Read books about going to school and talk about it in a happy, matter-of-fact way.

Preparing in the Months Before School

  • Visit the preschool together so the place, the teachers and the classroom feel familiar.
  • Slowly move wake-up and bedtime towards the school-day schedule. Our bedtime routines guide can help.
  • Let your child choose their bag or water bottle so they feel excited and involved.
  • Expect a few tears in the first weeks. See Separation Anxiety on the First Day of Preschool for gentle ways to help.

A Note for Parents

Every child develops at their own pace. The signs in this article are general guidance to help you think about readiness, not a test or a diagnostic tool. If you have concerns about your child's speech, behaviour or development, please consult your paediatrician or a qualified early childhood professional. Early assessment can help identify support needs.
