Preschool Admission Age: What If Your Child Is Underage or Overage?

"My child's birthday is in August. Is she too young for Nursery?" "We moved cities and my son is almost 4. Should he start from Playgroup?" These are some of the most common questions parents ask during admission season.

Age criteria can feel confusing, especially when your child's birthday falls close to a school's cut-off date. This guide explains how preschool age groups work, why the Grade 1 age matters, and how to think about it calmly if your child is a little younger or older than the usual range.

The Usual Age for Each Preschool Class

Most preschools group children roughly like this. At Saranshi, these are the age groups for our classes:

  • Playgroup: 2 to 3 years
  • Nursery (Pre-KG): 3 to 4 years
  • Junior KG (LKG): 4 to 5 years
  • Senior KG (UKG): 5 to 6 years

Age is usually counted as on a cut-off date, often near the start of the academic year. The exact date can differ between states, boards and schools, so always ask the school which date they use.

Start with Grade 1 and Work Backwards

The National Education Policy 2020 describes a foundational stage for children aged 3 to 8: three years of preschool followed by Classes 1 and 2. In 2023, the Ministry of Education asked states and union territories to set the age for Class 1 admission at six years and above.

This is why the class your child joins today matters. A simple way to plan is to work backwards:

  1. Find out the Grade 1 age rule at the school or board you are likely to choose later.
  2. Work out the year your child will meet that age on the cut-off date.
  3. Count back to see which preschool class fits this year.

For example, if Grade 1 needs a child to be 6 and your child turns 6 in the 2030–31 year, they would usually be in Senior KG in 2029–30, Junior KG in 2028–29, and so on. Rules can change, so check again with the schools each year.

If Your Child Is Underage

A child is "underage" when they fall a little short of the age needed on the cut-off date, often because of a birthday just after it. Some points to consider:

  • Ask about the school's rule. Some schools allow a small margin; others follow the cut-off strictly. Don't assume either way.
  • Think about Grade 1, not just this year. Starting a class early may leave your child too young for Grade 1 later, and they may then need to repeat a year.
  • Look at your child, not only the calendar. Can they manage a few hours away from you, communicate their needs, and use the toilet or tell an adult when they need to go? A child who is not yet ready often has an easier time joining a year later.
  • Avoid rushing. Being one of the youngest in a class is not a problem for every child, but pushing a child ahead before they are ready can add pressure they don't need.

If Your Child Is Overage

A child is "overage" when they are older than the usual range for a class. This often happens after a move, a late start, a long illness or a family decision to wait. Some points to consider:

  • Join the class that matches their age. In most cases, an older child does better in the age-appropriate class than starting from Playgroup. Teachers can help them settle into routines they have missed.
  • Give them time to settle. A child joining mid-way may need a few weeks to get used to new routines, friends and teachers.
  • Talk to the school openly. Share anything that will help teachers support your child, such as previous schooling, languages spoken at home, or any concerns.
  • If you are waiting because of a concern, such as speech, behaviour or development, speak to a paediatrician or a qualified professional first. Holding a child back is not a substitute for getting the right support.

Questions to Ask the School

  • What cut-off date do you use to calculate age?
  • Is there any flexibility if my child's birthday is close to that date?
  • Which class will my child be in each year until Grade 1?
  • What documents do you need to confirm age, such as a birth certificate?
  • How do you help a child who joins older, younger or mid-year to settle in?

A Note for Parents

Every child develops at their own pace. The age ranges in this article are general guidelines used for planning, not a test of ability or a diagnostic tool. Admission rules differ between states, boards and schools and can change, so please confirm the current rules with the schools you are considering. If you have concerns about your child's development or readiness, consult your paediatrician or a qualified early childhood professional. Early assessment can help identify support needs.
